Whenever I’m in Italy, I enjoy a good espresso. There is one barista who is the best.
Even when using the same machine, the same technique, and the same coffee, other baristas can’t match the quality of his espresso. He is doing something different, which is somehow impossible to copy.
This got me thinking. There are three levels to build any professional skill.
Level 1: Learn the methodology. A consistent application of defined steps creates predictable satisfying results.
Level 2: Apply your talent. Your talent not only determines how fast you can adopt methodology. It is also responsible for improving on methodology to create even more impressive results.
Level 3: Use magic. This is an undefined, almost mysterious twist which creates the difference between impressive proficiency and true mastery.
True mastery is the key to stand apart in a crowded field.
Looking at your own professional skills, in which areas do you operate beyond talent and have entered the realms of magic yourself?
