Success is often achieved by simply avoiding mistakes.
There are five big mistakes if you want to build a high-performance culture in your team or organization.
- Mistake 1: Outsource the initiative to build a high-performance culture to Human Resources. Building a high-performance culture must be driven by the senior leaders. The role of Human Resources is to help these leaders to succeed.
- Mistake 2: Engage the entire organization at the beginning. Start with your senior leadership team instead and help them to role-model the desired behaviors.
- Mistake 3: Focus on the laggards. Don’t do this. Instead, exclusively focus on the supporters. If you encourage them, the majority of the organization will follow. In the end, the laggards will either join, or leave the organization.
- Mistake 4: Separate outcome from process. The way you build a high-performance culture, must be perfectly congruent with the desired end-results. For example, if speed is an essential part of the new culture, you can’t allow a two-year initiative to make it happen.
- Mistake 5: Be tolerant of good behavior. High-Performance is about making the switch from good behaviors to the best behavior. For example: Falling in love with your product is good behavior. Falling in love with your clients is the best behavior.
