While watching archery at the Olympics, I noticed something fascinating about the power of an arrow. Its ability to penetrate a target comes down to four key factors:

  1. Kinetic energy: This is a combination of the arrow’s mass and speed. The heavier and faster the arrow, the more powerful its impact.
  2. Direction: The accuracy of the shot matters. Are you aiming directly at the bullseye, or are you off-target?
  3. Impact area: The smaller the point of impact, the less energy is needed to penetrate the surface. A sharp needle will pierce your skin effortlessly, whereas a dull matchstick won’t even come close.

To increase an arrow’s penetration power, you can:

  1. Increase speed: Using a crossbow, for example, can shoot arrows at a much higher velocity.
  2. Add mass: Think of the massive ballistas used by the Roman Army—they launched giant, heavy bolts with devastating power.
  3. Improve direction: A spotter can help ensure that every shot is precisely aimed.
  4. Reduce the impact area: Equipping the arrow with a sharp metal tip can concentrate its force on a smaller area.

Now, consider how these same principles can help you make a bigger impact in your own organization:

  1. Increase speed: By setting tight deadlines, you can push yourself and your team to move faster and be more productive.
  2. Add mass: Build a strong, high-performing team around you. The more resources and support you have, the greater your potential impact.
  3. Improve direction: Establish clear goals to ensure you’re always moving toward your target.
  4. Reduce the impact area: Focus on becoming excellent in a specific niche. Specialization can make your efforts more effective and noticeable.

By consistently improving in these four areas, you’ll start to stand out—much like a tall giraffe towering above a crowd of tiny mice….
